Re-imagining Non-Space:
Exploring Transience and Connection.

The project uses the ephemeral as a lens for understanding movement and meaning. In the underground station, commuters are in a state of transition, with fleeting identities and unfixed locations. Exploring the dynamic interplay of space, place and non-place in the underground station as a non-place, and using its ephemerality as a cue to articulate neglected time. The project is divided into two parts: an interactive installation showing the connections in the underground station and a book defining and explaining the characteristics of the underground station as a non-place.

PUBLICATION

This is an archival handbook that serves as a guide to researching and guiding the discovery of actual Space, Place, and Non-place as they move through one’s life through visual observations and textual descriptions of Non-place.

INSTALLATION

The idea for the flip chart device came from train timetables in railway stations. The original timetable was a huge information interface comprising individual pages of letters. Before the arrival of the electronic screen, the flip chart was the most efficient means.
But it was also the most iconic device to represent the specificity of the transport occasion.
So I searched for an open-source design for a page-flipping device and adapted it, changing the images on the page that displayed the letters alone, and displaying the behavioural activities of others I observed in the non-place on the page.
The page flip device becomes a vehicle to metaphorically become the place and space where the whole Non-place takes place.
